Cyber Espionage Through Computer Repair Centers

Hard Drive Investigations
Probably, each of us has at least once sent our device for repair, whether it be a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone. Many have surely heard that a service center might deceive you, for example, by replacing your new parts with older ones or charging you for solving a fabricated problem. But there is another threat: the contents of your device's drives can be analyzed, valuable data stolen, and compromising information transmitted "where it should go."
The same applies to remote service providers; perhaps you have heard of them. Using remote control software, specialists connect to your computer and perform diagnostics and configuration. They too can gain access to your valuable information.
Do you think this is paranoia without practical grounds? Recently, thanks to a publication by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the public became aware of the close cooperation between Geek Squad, a subsidiary of the American company Best Buy, and the FBI. In simple terms, Best Buy Geek Squad is a computer and mobile device repair center.
What did the cooperation entail? Company managers received money, and in exchange, FBI agents gained access to illegal materials that employees searched for on clients' devices. This operation had been ongoing for about ten years.
Still think it's paranoia? Interestingly, did California surgeon Mark Rettenmaier think the same when he was charged with possessing child pornography on his computer, which came to the FBI's attention thanks to a repair center?
Unfortunately for him, he had the misfortune of sending his computer for repair without considering the security of its contents. Indirect evidence suggests the use of forensic software to analyze the contents of Mark Rettenmaier's computer, as a simple visual inspection would not have revealed hidden materials.
I am not defending Mark, but his story illustrates that all devices were scrutinized and all files analyzed, including personal, possibly intimate ones. https://book.cyberyozh.com/ru/chto-mozhno-vyiyasnit-po-fotografii-v-seti-ustanovlenie-lichnosti-ip-adresa-mesta-semki-i-mnogoe-drugoe
